Oleander Caterpillar by UniversalSweet Oleander Caterpillar by UniversalSweet
This is the little guy who turns into the very shiny chrysalis "Chrysalis II" in my gallery and then hatches into the butterfly shown in "Portrait of a Butterfly II" also in my gallery.

PS: I tried making links to the photos but I couldn't get it to work the way I wanted it too .... doh

This caterpillar is a Common Crow Caterpillar. There is actually a separate species that are called oleander caterpillars. :) this little guy just happens to eat oleander.

This thing looks as if it belongs in a coffee shop. The stripes of foam white, mocha dark brown with caramel brown mixed in and those curls that look like whisps of steam emanating from a hot drink make me think so. Quite the beauty, fantastic job photographing it!

Do those tendrils on its back move around or are they limp? It'd be extra-keen if they move around like tentacles! :excited:
Reply
:iconuniversalsweet:
UniversalSweet Featured By Owner Mar 29, 2006
the tendrils are quite rigid, they wiggle when the caterpillar moves along but i don't think he has independent control over them. :) The arching pose, like in this pic, is a defence mechanism that makes them stick up to scare off hungry predetors ... glad you like the pic

[link] <> Here's a pic of a Cecropia caterpillar. If you see a living one in person, you can actually watch it breath by watching the tiny blue spiracles along its sides expand and contract like little irises. :giggle:

replace the #060 with <
and the #062 with > and it will work.
- I should have used # 60 and # 62 I believe....

There are two ways that I have found on DA to include links:
1. Paste the URL in and DA will change it to a link that will appear as: [link]
Simple, easy, non-descriptive

http: //www.deviantart.com /view /7411278/ (remove the spaces in the preceding text on this line) Oleander Caterpiller

[link] Oleander Caterpiller
[link] Chrysalis II
[link] Changes
[link] Portrait of Butterfly - Male Citrus Swallowtail
[link] Portrait of Butterfly II
[link] Portrait of Butterfly III
[link] Chrysalis II

2. DA accepts valid HTML for links.

This allows more descriptive links:

#060a href="http://www.deviantart.com/view/7411278/"#062[ Oleander Caterpiller ]#060/a#062
[ Oleander Caterpiller ]

#060a href="http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/7022456/"#062[ Chrysalis II ]#060/a#062

Nice shot :)

If you put the below code in (but remove the space after the first '<' and before the last '>' on each one) then it will link to the photos the way I think you want it to :)

< A HREF="http://www.deviantart.com/view/7022456/">Chrysalis II</A >

< A HREF="http://www.deviantart.com/view/6725892/">;Portrait of Butterfly II</A >
